Sam Ramji, CEO of Cloud Foundry Foundation, visited SAP Labs Bulgaria and held a session where he shared with the colleagues more about the Cloud Foundry Foundation and its philosophy. Sam talked also about his view on the future of the Cloud and how an enterprise company as SAP together with its partners could benefit from being a member of the Cloud Foundry Foundation.
Cloud Foundry is a non-profit foundation that supports the open global development of the Cloud Foundry open source platform. The platform targets to abstract the cloud provider and thus an application written for Cloud Foundry to run on any cloud provider. The foundation represents a broad community of companies and developers that includes SAP, Pivotal, HPE, IBM, GE, Cisco, VMware, EMC and many more. At SAP Labs Bulgaria we have few teams effectively working with and contributing to Cloud Foundry platform. More than half of the SAP committers to the platform are based in Sofia. Sam thanked to all the colleagues that contribute to Cloud Foundry, because it is not easy to work every day on the backlog and to fix complex issues.
We all believe that more customers on a platform attract more developers who build new applications. And this in turn attracts even more customers creating an ever growing loop which at the end is a benefit to all of the parties. “The more players, the better everyone does. SAP’s bold decision to pour your effort into this open ecosystem is a boon for every customer, partner, and developer. We’re tremendously excited.” said Sam.
At SAP Labs Bulgaria we work on significant parts of SAP HANA Cloud Platform which lately is more and more leveraging Cloud Foundry. SAP in general is a strong contributor to the Cloud Foundry codebase and ecosystem. As Sam says, SAP partners live in the same changing world where we have all built Cloud Foundry to address the need for cloud computing that drives business value. And Cloud Foundry Foundation tries to address one of the main problems with open source – synchronization. Last year the Foundation started a Certification program for platform providers to ensure that developers have the same experience of using Cloud Foundry across all vendors. There is also an encouragement for contributing not only source code, but also efforts on aligning how particular projects should move forward, not only developers but project leads as well, creating a broader overview of what companies see as the future of cloud computing.
If two developers like each other, they play a game called “Pair programming”. If they don’t like each other, they play a game called “Code review”
SAP Labs Bulgaria colleagues had the opportunity to ask their questions and have a chat with Sam. Since we all are building the cloud technologies for the future and are looking forward to the Digital Transformation through continuous delivery, I am happy we all had the opportunity to share ideas and thoughts with Sam during his visit in Sofia.
